INDIGO | Into the Blue

FarmLab, Kapfenstein – April 2025

At FarmLab, I explored the traditional sugar vat method of indigo dyeing, engaging with the alchemical process of fermentation, transformation, and deep material connection. Guided by patience and repetition—stirring, dipping, waiting—I observed the indigo oxidize and bloom into vibrant blue as it emerged from the vat. I experimented with a local pigment harvested on-site, grounding the work further in the surrounding landscape. I dyed heirloom linen fabrics woven by my great-grandmother, using shibori techniques for the first time to shape the dye's path. Each fold, bind, and layer of pigment became part of an evolving dialogue between memory, place, and the living nature of color.

I continued experimenting with indigo during the development of the Amber Grain collection, which was presented in Zlín. Part of the collection are also garments dyed using local indigo from Styria, which I worked with during a FarmLab residency. The result is a series of models that carry the authentic imprint of the landscapes where they were created.
