NATURAL DYES

Colours of April in Styria

Foraging, cooking, stirring, fermenting, and waiting.

At FarmLab, nestled in the hills of Kapfenstein, the forests and garden gifted me a wide range of beautiful colours. I'm always amazed by how rich and vibrant natural dyes can be. This time, my aim was to create an April rainbow with blooming flowers, sprouts. I also incorporated some dried plants and fruits gifted by Silvia.

My main focus was wool. It's fascinating how each fibre reacts differently to the same mordant, producing such varied outcomes.
One of my favourite discoveries was experimenting with grape hyacinths. Through fermentation alone, they reveal a stunning palette. From soft blues to vibrant violets. April also shines in yellows, thanks to dandelions, daffodils, and even mistletoe.
